COMPENSATION FOR CRIMINAL INJURIES, GARDA EQUIPMENT

At the proceedings of the Committee on 26 October, 1978 I undertook to supply (i) as regards the Scheme of Compensation for Personal Injuries Criminally Inflicted —Vote 22—information in relation to the total amount paid to date in respect of people killed or injured in bombings (and their dependants) and (ii) a breakdown of the total expenditure of £671,372 under subhead H (Equipment) of the Garda Síochána Vote (Vote 23).


The information sought is as follows:


(i) Vote for the Office of the Minister for Justice—Compensation for Personal Injuries Criminally Inflicted.


Compensation payments up to 28 November, 1978, arising out of bombings:


Paid to injured persons

£613,165

 

Paid to dependants of persons killed

£185,131

 

Total =

£798,296

 

An additional sum of £19,000 has been awarded to an injured person who is a minor and will be paid as soon as certain procedural requirements have been complied with.


For various reasons there are still some twenty cases in which the Tribunal have not yet been in a position to make a final award.
