PROCEEDINGS OF THE JOINT COMMITTEE

1. The Joint Committee met at 3.30 p.m.


2. Members Present.


The following Members were present:


Deputies Clinton (in the Chair). Daly, Flanagan, Griffin, Leonard, McCreevy, Noonan, O’Keeffe, Quinn and Woods; Senators Hussey, Molony, Mulcahy, Robinson and Eoin Ryan.


Senator Brugha, Member of the European Parliament, also attended.


5. Draft Report on the Teaching of Languages in the Community.


Senator Robinson brought forward a Draft Report which was read as follows:—


(i) Paragraphs 1 to 7, inclusive, agreed to.


(ii) Paragraph 8.


Paragraph read as follows:


“In view of the importance of the subject of teaching Continental languages the Joint Committee requests that a debate take place on this Report in each House. In this connection the Joint Committee refers to the Orders of Seanad Éireann and Dáil Éireann of 3rd May, 1978 and 11th October, 1978, respectively.”


Amendment proposed (Deputy O’Keeffe):


“In paragraph 8, line 3, to delete ‘each House’ and to substitute Seanad Éireann; to delete lines 5 and 6 and to substitute ‘Order of Seanad Éireann of 3rd May, 1978’.”


Amendment agreed to.
