SOCIAL WELFARE—CERTAIN SAVINGS TO VOTE

At the proceedings of the Committee of Public Accounts on 16 March 1978 I undertook to examine the question of the savings to the Social Welfare Vote arising from the progressive reduction of pension age in recent years in the case of persons in receipt of two social welfare payments, who on reaching pension age, become entitled only to one such payment. I wish to inform you that this matter has been examined in the Department but it is not possible, due to lack of data, to furnish an estimate of the amount of the savings in such cases.
