APPENDIX 44.

FISHERY RESEARCH VESSELS.

The fishery research vessel “Cú Feasa” was commissioned in 1958 and a second research vessel “Cú na Mara” came into service in 1966. The function of these vessels is to assist the scientific section of Fisheries Division in their investigations into the stocks of the various species of fish in Irish waters, as well as to explore the grounds for fresh stocks. When the vessels are not engaged on scientific programmes they undertake commercial fishing.


During 1969/70 the operations of the vessels were as follows:—

In August, 1972, the “Cú na Mara” was damaged by fire and it has been decided to offer the damaged vessel for sale. The question of her replacement will be dealt with as a separate matter at a later date.
