APPENDIX 12.

DUBLIN AIRPORT: LAND HELD BY DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT AND POWER

An Cléireach,

An Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí.

During the proceedings of the Committee of Public Accounts on 22nd July, 1971 I undertook to furnish a note on what land is held by my Department at Dublin Airport outside the actual airport area beside the runways, what other land is held, how long it has been held, its use and what rents are obtained.

The total area of land at Dublin Airport is approximately 1,380 acres. Of this area about 865 acres are occupied by runways and associated grass strips, taxiways, aprons, buildings, car parks, roads, spoil dumps, etc. Portion of the airport land was State property before the airport was developed for international air transport. Fairly substantial areas totalling about 560 acres, were acquired under compulsory acquisition orders made by the Minister in 1947 and 1951. Since then about 80 acres have been acquired by agreement.

The enclosed statement gives:—

(a) in schedule 1, a breakdown of the total area of 1,380 acres showing how various acreages are utilised;

(b) in schedule 2, particulars of agricultural lands outside the airfield, including annual revenue derived from them;

(c) in schedule 3, particulars of sites let for buildings and other facilities outside the airfield, including annual revenue derived from them.

The number and frequency of aircraft movements at the airport has now reached the stage where it is no longer practicable or economical to continue the existing arrangement of contracting with local farmers to cut and remove the grass for silage purposes. From next year, therefore, grass cutting will be done by airport management. This is the arrangement adopted at comparable European airports.

Due to the large scale attraction tillage operations have for birds in the vicinity of the airport, it has been decided in the interests of safety and the economics of aircraft operations that cultivation of airport lands should be discontinued and that lands already under tillage should be returned to grass as soon as possible.
