An Cléireach,

An Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí.

At the proceeding of the Committee on the 12th March, 1970, I undertook to furnish a note on the staffing requirements of the Technical Grades in my Department during the next five years.

Recruitment of Departmental and Professional Grades.

The grades in which there is an appreciable number of vacancies at present are:—

Engineer Grade III.

Meteorologist.

Meteorological Assistant.

Technical Officer (Radio Service).

Air Traffic Control Assistant.

Details of the present staff numbers required and probable vacancies are:—

Meteorologist and Engineer Grade III.

A competition is being arranged for Meteorologists to attract candidates. Permission has been granted for entry to the salary scale at points above the minimum depending on qualifications and experience. This also applies to Engineers.

Meteorological Assistant.

The latest competition for Meteorological Assistants was disappointing. It is felt that the scales of pay are not adequate to attract candidates with the qualifications to pursue University Courses. It is intended, for a trial period, to lower the academic qualifications. In addition it is proposed, if approved, to allow candidates with higher qualifications to enter the scale above the minimum.

Technical Officer and Control Assistants.

There was a large number of vacancies for Technical Officers in the years 1968 and 1969 which resulted in high overtime payments. There are now only three vacancies. Competitions are being held for Technical Officers and Control Assistants. The large number of vacancies in the Control Assistant Grade is due to a recent increase in the authorised strength of the Air Traffic Services. There is no particular difficulty in recruitment in those grades.
