APPENDIX 30.EXPENDITURE ON TUBERCULOSIS SERVICES.1. The Table shows the numbers of cases of Tuberculosis discovered in each Health Authority area in the years ended 31st December, 1965, and 31st December, 1966. Increases in expenditure on tuberculosis between the years 1965-66 and 1966-67 were attributed by some Health Authorities to increases in the numbers of new cases discovered. The figures in some instances support this explanation, but a constant correlation between numbers of new cases and expenditure on the services cannot be assumed. Cases discovered towards the end of a financial year, for instance, have little influence on treatment costs in that year. 2. The cost of maintaining an institution does not vary proportionately with patient population, and it may happen that where a group of Health Authorities share the cost of a hospital on the basis of the numbers of patient days attributable to each area the amount to be met by one of the authorities may rise between one year and another solely because of a fall in the number of patients chargeable to other authorities. 3. The increase in the total cost of the service between the years 1965-66 and 1966-67 was £15,200 which represents only 2 per cent of the costs in the earlier year. The extent of the institutional accommodation devoted to tuberculosis patients showed no significant change and the increase in expenditure may therefore be attributed to rising institutional costs rather than variations in the demands on the services. NUMBERS OF NEW CASES OF TUBERCULOSIS DISCOVERED IN THE YEARS ENDED 31st DECEMBER, 1965 AND 31st DECEMBER, 1966.
