Cost of Rebuilding the Abbey Theatre.

At the meeting of the Public Accounts Committee on 9th February, 1967, I undertook to furnish information regarding the increase in the final cost of rebuilding the Abbey Theatre over the original estimate.

The estimate of £250,000 in April, 1958 for rebuilding the Abbey Theatre was a very tentative one. A further estimate in July, 1960, based on a costing by a Quantity Surveyor, gave a figure of £280,000 which included the shell of the Peacock Theatre but excluded professional fees. The Office of Public Works were consulted about these estimates which they regarded as reasonable.

The contract for the new building was placed with the lowest tenderer at a figure of £309,773 with an estimated addition of £38,721 for professional fees and expenses, making £348,494 in all. The final estimated cost is £649,534 or an increase of £301,040 over the contract price plus fees, etc. This increase is accounted for as follows:—
