COST OF MAINTENANCE OF PRISONERS.

At the proceedings of the Committee on the 14th February, 1963, I undertook to supply information in regard to the average cost of maintaining a prisoner in Mountjoy as compared with Portlaoise Prison.

Over the year 1961-62 the cost of maintaining a prisoner (including food, clothing, accommodation and staff) at Mountjoy and Portlaoise Prisons was £432 and £502, respectively.
