APPENDIX XXVI.ACCOUNTS OF THE IRISH NEWS AGENCY.Cléireach, An Coiste um Chúntais Phoiblí. In the course of my examination before the Committee of Public Accounts on the 12th March, 1959, I undertook to furnish a Note dealing with the accounts of the Irish News Agency in respect of the period from 1st April, 1957, to 29th November, 1957 (the date of liquidation of the Agency). The amount of the repayable advances issued to the Irish News Agency since its formation in 1949-50 was £333,500 and extra-statutory grants to the amount of £22,667 15s. were also issued to the Agency to meet the expenses of winding up its affairs. In the final accounts of the Agency in respect of the period 1st April, 1957, to the 29th November, 1957 (the date of the liquidation), which were laid by the Minister for External Affairs before each House of the Oireachtas on the 11th December, 1958 (P. No. 4856), the total of these amounts, viz., £356,167 15s. appears as a liability on the balance sheet under the description “Minister for External Affairs: Advances.” The final accounts of the Agency show that the total balance on the general Profit and Loss Account, representing the accumulated losses to the 29th November, 1957, as brought forward to the balance sheet, amounted to £356,107 5s. 7d., made up as follows:
