During my examination before the Committee of Public Accounts on 13 November, 1958, I undertook to furnish a detailed explanatory note of the excess of £311 on Subhead A. of the Vote for Houses of the Oireachtas for the year 1957-58.

I append a note accordingly.

The provision under this subhead is for the salaries and allowances of Comhaltaí other than An Taoiseach, Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries and Attorney General for whom provision is made in the relevant Departmental Votes.

Due to the change in administration following the General Election in March, 1957, the number of Comhaltaí who were not in receipt of salaries as holders of appointed offices and whose allowances were chargeable to the subhead increased from 124 under the previous administration to 130 at 1st April, 1957— the difference of six being accounted for by the fact that there were three fewer Ministers, two fewer Parliamentary Secretaries and the Attorney General appointed was not a member of the Oireachtas.

The actual net excess of £311 on the subhead arose as follows—
