APPENDIX XXIV

PURCHASE OF BUILDING AT RATHLUIRC FOR DEPARTMENT OF POSTS AND TELEGRAPHS.

Cléireach don Choiste um Chuntais Phoiblí.

Qns. 380 and 381.

I set out hereunder a note on the point raised during my examination before the Public Accounts Committee on the 24th October, 1957, as to the reason for the purchase of an existing building at Rathluirc, Co. Cork, demolishing it and erecting a new building for the Department of Posts and Telegraphs on the cleared site.

Rathluirc Post Office and Telephone Exchange, Co. Cork.

The premises were purchased by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs in May, 1947 with the object of developing them by adaptation and extension of the existing buildings so as to provide a new Post Office, with telephone accommodation. The telephone accommodation envisaged at the time was modest, being based on the assumption that Rathluirc would be dependent on an Auto-Manual Exchange at Mallow. Later, however, the Department of Posts and Telegraphs found that development on these lines would be unsound and decided that a full Auto-Manual Exchange for Rathluirc should be provided. This necessitated the provision of much more extensive floor area; and it became evident that it would not be possible to plan satisfactorily for the revised requirements of the Department by adapting and extending the existing buildings. It was decided in the circumstances, with the approval of the Minister for Finance, to demolish the existing buildings and erect a new building on the site.
