PROCEEDINGS OF THE COMMITTEE

Dé Céadaoin, 13ú Bealtaine, 1953.

Wednesday, 13th May, 1953.

1. The Sixteenth meeting of the Committee took place at 10.30 a.m. in Room 106.

2. The following Members were present:—

The Ceann Comhairle (Chairman), the Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach, Deputies Breen, Cogan, Corish, Cunningham, Davern, Doyle, Dillon, S. Flanagan, Hilliard, T. O’Sullivan, Mrs. Rice and Sweetman.

3. PREMATURE DISCLOSURE OF REPORT OF SELECT COMMITTEE.

The Order of the Dáil of the 6th May referring to the Committee the matter of the publication in the Sunday Express of a substantially accurate news item relating to the Report of the Select Committee on Judicial Salaries, Expense Allowances and Pensions which had not then been published to Dáil Éireann was read.

The Committee deliberated.

It was agreed that the contents of the news item were in substantial agreement with the terms of the Report since published.

It was resolved that disclosure of the terms of the Report prior to publication to Dáil Éireann was a breach of the privileges of the House.

Direction was given that inquiry be made from the Chairman of the Oireachtas Press Gallery if he would afford the Committee all relevant information that he had on the matter.

7. The Committee adjourned at 11.45 a.m.
