APPENDIX VIII.

UNEMPLOYMENT ARISING FROM SUSPENSION OF WORK AT LEADEN MODELS FACTORY.

Rúnaí,

Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí.

At the proceedings of the Committee of Public Accounts on the 24th October, 1951, I undertook to supply information as to the number of persons disemployed when work in the Leaden Models Factory at Spiddal, Co. Galway, was suspended on the 31st August, 1949. I also undertook to furnish particulars of the absorption of any of the displaced persons in other activities of the Gaeltacht Services Division.

The number of workers involved was seven men and thirty-four girls. When the Leaden Models Factory was closed it was anticipated that the premises in Spiddal would be re-organised to produce composition heads and hard bodyparts for dolls assembled in the Toy Factory at Crolly, Co. Donegal. This re-organisation was effected and all of the men, except one, who obtained employment in Dublin, were employed on the new products at Spiddal. Two of the men left voluntarily later, but the other four are still employed.

The thirty-four girls displaced were offered employment in the knitwear centres at Ballinahown and Carraroe, but only three accepted. Two of these left voluntarily but the third is still working in the Ballinahown centre. Three others were taken on for the production of dolls’ heads. Two of these also left voluntarily later but the third is still employed in the Spiddal factory.
