In explanation of these figures it should be stated that this scheme was only taken over from the County Councils by Bórd na Móna on 1st January, 1948, and that while expenditure on capital items, viz. machines, etc., and on work in connection with the preparation of the bogs for production and the setting up of the necessary organisation was incurred between 1st January, 1948 and the end of the financial year there was no actual production in that period.
During the 1948 production season production was restricted as a result of the inexperience of the workers in the operation of the new semi-automatic machines installed on the bogs for the first time in that year. Sales were affected owing to the fact that increased supplies of coal became available in 1948/1949.
