APPENDIX XII.

STATISTICS RELATING TO FERTILISER SUBSIDIES.

With reference to the inquiry regarding fertiliser subsidies at the meeting of the Committee of Public Accounts on the 18th instant, I have to state, for the Committee’s information, that the documents furnished to this Department by the Department of Industry and Commerce (Prices Branch) disclose the following particulars:—

(iii) Profit or loss actually made

2. The selling prices of the fertilisers in the two seasons were as follows:—

(b) Compound Fertiliser

(c) Nitrate of Ammonia

3. The particulars in the first paragraph above show that the Irish Fertiliser Manufacturers Association made a profit of £39,512 over and above the allowed profit for the 1944-45 season, while at the lower selling price for superphosphate in the 1945-46 season the Association sustained a loss of £15,341. In order to recoup this loss to the manufacturers and to give them the allowed profit for the season it was necessary to pay a subsidy of £57,907, that is the actual loss of £15,341 plus the approved profit £42,566. This was done by refunding the Association the surplus profit made in the 1944-45 season, which had been surrendered by them, and making a further payment to them of £18,395.
