SPECIAL EVENING CLASSES IN DUBLIN CITY

(9th March, 1947, to 27th June, 1947)

It is not possible to state, from the statistics available, the total number of children who were eligible to attend these Special Evening Classes, as the returns called for in January, 1947, in connection with the proposed establishment of the classes, were not furnished in the case of all the Senior Schools in the City. The returns were furnished for only 86 schools, out of some 160 which were circularised.

The number of children eligible to attend the evening classes as given on the returns from the 86 schools was 963.

The classes were established in 17 centres, and a total of 708 children attended. In many cases, however, the attendance was very irregular; some children attended on only one or two evenings.

In the case of the 86 schools for which returns were furnished to the Department, the number of children who would have been eligible to attend if the classes had not been restricted to pupils in employment, was 1,647.
