APPENDIX IX.

PAYMENT OF STATE GRANTS IN AID OF THE COST OF THE HEATING AND CLEANING OF NATIONAL SCHOOLS.

Subject to the maximum amounts specified in the subjoined table, grants may be made by the Department of Education as follows:—


(a) one half of the certified aid in cash or kind* provided by the local parties in respect of the provisions of fuel for the satisfactory heating of the school-rooms during school hours in the cold season of the year;


(b) one half of the certified aid in cash provided by the local parties in respect of the cost of labour for the dusting and cleaning of the school-rooms daily; the setting and lighting of the fires; the periodical washing of the floors and the cleansing of the interior surface of the walls, etc., of the premises;


(c) one half of the certified aid in cash similarly provided in respect of the cost of cleansing the out-offices.

and so forth, allowing for every additional 100 pupils in the scale of average daily attendance, an additional £2 for heating and £4 for cleaning, etc.



2. Vouchers must be produced, on demand, by Managers for all expenditure on fuel, cleaning materials, etc., in respect of which a grant is claimed. In the case of wages paid to cleaners, etc., the Manager must furnish a receipt signed by the employee for the amount paid, but this requirement is waived in the case of—


(a) labour employed in the emptying and cleansing of out-offices;


(b) other casual labour as, for example, on the sweeping of chimneys, where the Manager cannot obtain a receipt, provided that the amount of the State Grant for the item in question does not exceed £1.
