MAINTENANCE OF CRIMINAL LUNATICS IN DISTRICT MENTAL HOSPITALS.

The number of criminal lunatics in District Mental Hospitals and the amount expended on their maintenance during each of the ten years 1929-30/1938-39 were as follows:—

It will be seen from the above figures that while the number of criminal lunatics in District Mental Hospitals has declined somewhat in the period of ten years 1929-30 to 1938-39 the cost of their maintenance has increased, with the result that the cost of maintenance per head which in 1929-30 was £42 2s. 0d. rose to £46 11s. 0d. in 1938-39.
