Committee Reports::Report - Appropriation Accounts 1936 - 1937::16 February, 1939::Appendix

APPENDIX VIII.

STATE LABORATORY FEES FOR TESTS OF FOODS OR DRUGS.

In the course of my examination before the Committee of Public Accounts on the 17th instant, I undertook to furnish information as to the fee charged by the State Laboratory in respect of tests carried out at the instance of Justices, or higher courts on appeal, of articles of food or drug which have been the subject of proceedings under the Sale of Food and Drugs Acts.

The amount of the fee for each such analysis has been fixed by the Department of Finance at £1 1s. 0d.

I should perhaps have made it clear in my evidence before the Committee that tests carried out by the State Laboratory on behalf of a local authority would normally be restricted to tests of commodities purchased by the local authorities under the system established by the Local Authorities (Combined Purchasing) Act, 1925. Where a local authority has reason to believe that a particular commodity supplied by contractors under the Combined Purchasing Scheme is not up to specification, it may forward a sample to the Department of Local Government and Public Health, which arranges for the necessary examination in the State Laboratory. The cost of such tests is recovered annually from the local authorities as part of the expenses of the Minister for Local Government and Public Health in carrying out his duties under the Act.
