APPENDIX XIX.SUBSIDIES ON CREAMERY BUTTER EXPORTED.The Clerk to the Committee of Public Accounts. In connection with paragraph 103 in the Report of the Comptroller and Auditor-General on the Appropriation Accounts for 1935-36, the following observations are submitted for the information of the Committee:— The average rate of subsidy paid on exports to the United Kingdom during the 1935-36 season was 23s. 1d. per cwt. This represents the average rate over the whole financial year when the rates varied from 19/- to 49/7 and the exports varied from 2,500 cwt. to 108,000 cwt. per month. Furthermore, during the period April to September, 1935, when the rates varied from 19/- to 25/-, the total quantity of butter exported was 405,000 cwt., while in the period October, 1935, to March, 1936, when the rates varied from 27/- to 49/7, the exports totalled only 65,000 cwt. In connection with the Continental trade, the butter was exported during the period October, 1935, to March, 1936, and the total amount of subsidy paid was £35,596 19s. 9d., equivalent to an average rate of 40/4 per cwt. If this butter had been exported to the United Kingdom in the same period the payments of subsidy would have amounted to £37,794 2s. 8d., representing an average rate of 42/9½ per cwt. Looked at in relation to exports to the British market, the payment of subsidy mentioned in paragraph 103 of the Report accordingly represents a saving to the Exchequer of £2,197 2s. 11d.
