APPENDIX VIII.

PLACES OF DETENTION FOR CHILDREN.

In accordance with the provisions of the Children Act, 1908, persons under 16 years of age apprehended by the police and not released on recognisances pending the hearing of the charge (Sec. 95), and persons under 16 years of age remanded or sent for trial by the District Court, and not admitted to bail (Sec. 97), are, normally, sent to Places of Detention; a list of the places approved for that purpose is attached.


Payment is made to the Authorities of these Places of Detention at the rate of 2/6 per head per day, the payments, except in the case of Summerhill, Dublin, being made by the Gárda, who recover the amounts so paid from the Vote for Reformatory and Industrial Schools.


The number committed in an average year to Places of Detention other than Summerhill is about 90.
