Michael Christie, Esq., Clerk to the Special Committee on Home-Grown Tobacco Duties, Leinster House. Dear Sir, Your favour of the 26th ultimo inviting this Association to send a representative to give evidence at the coming enquiry as to the desirability of granting any further remission of excise duty to growers of tobacco in the Saorstát was read at a meeting of my Committee held on yesterday. Instructions were given me to write you saying that as the Association was not interested in the matter, my Committee did not intend tendering evidence at the enquiry. Yours faithfully, (Signed) JAMES FORRISTAL, Secretary. (B) Wm. Ruddell, Limited, 134 James’s Street, Dublin, 27th February, 1926. To the Clerk to the Special Committee, Home-Grown Tobacco Duties, Leinster House, Dublin. Dear Sir, We beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 26th instant with reference to the duty on home-grown tobaccos, and in reply beg to inform you that we have handed same to the Secretary of our Association, who will write you in the course of a few days. Yours faithfully, WM. RUDDELL. (S. M. Nesbitt). T. P. & R. Goodbody, Limited, Greenville, Dublin, 1st March, 1926. Michael Christie, Esq., Leinster House, Kildare Street, Dublin. Dear Sir, I am in receipt of your circular letter re Irish-grown Tobacco. I will attend the Committee if requested to do so. I can give evidence of growing, having had ten years’ experience, also of the manufacture of it. Yours faithfully, (Signed) R. H. GOODBODY. Dail Eireann, Tigh Laighean (Leinster House), Baile Atha Cliath (Dublin), 19th March, 1926. A Chara, Before bringing its deliberations to a close the Committee wish to hear the evidence of a representative of the Irish Tobacco Manufacturers’ Association. On the 26th ultimo I wrote to Mr. Nesbitt, c/o Wm. Ruddell, Limited, James Street, believing he was Secretary to the Irish Tobacco Manufacturers’ Association, inviting the Association to send a representative to give evidence before the Committee. Mr. Nesbitt informed me in his reply, dated 27th February, 1926, that he had handed my letter to the Secretary of the Association, who would write to me in the course of a few days. I have not had any communication so far from the Association, and as I understand you are its Chairman I shall be obliged if you will kindly arrange to have a reply sent to me at the earliest opportunity. Mise le meas, MICHEAL CHRISTIE, Cléireach an Choiste. R. H. Goodbody, Esq., Messrs. T. P. & R. Goodbody, Limited, Greenville, Dublin. T. P. & R. Goodbody, Limited, Greenville, Dublin, 20th March, 1926. Michael Christie, Esq., Leinster House, Dublin. Dear Sir, I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter, and in reply wish to say that the Irish manufacturers have no Association here, but the independent manufacturers work together as far as possible. If the Committee consider that the Imperial Tobacco Co. could assist them, it will be necessary for you to communicate direct with them. Though the independent manufacturers are at all times willing to give their assistance, I do not think they can give any further evidence than that given by myself. Yours faithfully, (Signed) R. H. GOODBODY. (C) Wm. Clarke & Son, (Branch of the Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain & Ireland), Ltd.), South Circular Road, Dolphin’s Barn, Dublin, 16th March, 1926. To the Clerk to the Committee, (Home-Grown Tobacco Duties), Leinster House, Dublin. Dear Sir, We are in receipt of your letter of the 15th inst., for which we thank you. As this firm is a branch only of the Imperial Tobacco Company it will be necessary for us to receive authorisation from the Company to give evidence on the matters in question. We are communicating with our Head Office on this point in order to ascertain the wishes of our Board. In any event, we regret that we shall not be in a position to give evidence on Thursday next. Yours faithfully, Wm. Clarke & Son. (C. E. Whitcroft). |
